For those of you new to our little group of geeks, we are a hobby board game group located in Winnebago county in east central Wisconsin, with many interests. If you're here that means that some of them are your interests too. Board games, computer games, rpg, miniatures, sci-fi, fantasy, and probably other such things. Even with all our interests board gaming remains primary for us.

We always like having new players around so introduce yourself on the forums and get comfortable. And if you find that we're your type of gamers, well, invite yourself to a game night or day that we frequently have.

<p><a class="colorbox" title="Alien Ascendancy" href="/sites/default/files/imagepicker/4/alienascendancy.jpg" rel="nofollow"><img src="/sites/default/files/imagepicker/4/thumbs/alienascendancy.jpg" alt="Alien Ascendancy" style="float:right" /></a>I first <a href="http://www.boardgamenews.com/oldsite/index.php/boardgamenews/comments/jklm_games_announces_titles_for_uk_games_expo_spiel_08/" rel="nofollow">reported</a> on Nigel Buckle's <i><b>Alien Ascendancy</b></i> – then called just <i>Ascendancy</i> – in March 2008, with more detail being <a href="http://www.boardgamenews.com/oldsite/index.php/boardgamenews/comments/convention_report_uk_games_expo_2008_first_thoughts/" rel="nofollow">published</a> in May 2008 after playing the game at the UK Games Expo. Here's what I wrote about the game at the time:</p>
<blockquote><p>My quick take on the game is <i>Agricola</i> crossed with <i>Roads & Boats</i> iced with interstellar combat, but that might not do justice to Nigel Buckle’s design. We played a two-player basic game in an hour, which provided a taste of the technologies and possible actions as you compete against the Empire (which is played automatically by the game) and your opponents. You can choose to be more of an isolationist, or you can push your way in front of another and – if they’re not careful – make off with their geese before they have a chance to respond.</p>
<p>The advanced game adds unique player powers, an advanced tech tree, variable endgame bonuses based on player choices, and more planning and decision-making. Lots of stuff to explore in this one.</p>

<p>Although the game was scheduled for a Spiel 2008 debut, the game was a no show, with November 2008 being the new release date, then December, then sometime in 2009, then – who knew? <i>Alien Ascendancy</i> was like a spaceship cruising ahead of you in the desert, popping into view to catch your attention and dazzle your mind, then racing ahead and slowly pulling farther and farther away until it vanished over the horizon.</p>
<p>And now its disappearance from the publishing calendar is official as I received this note today from Nigel Buckle: "Markus Welbourne [from JKLM Games / Prime Games] asked me to make the following announcement on his behalf:</p>

</div> <p><b><i>Troyes</i></b>, the first title released by newly-founded Belgian publisher Pearl Games, is the brainchild of a trio of Belgian designers: Xavier Georges (<i>Royal Palace</i>, <i>Carson City</i>), Alain Orban (<i>Santy Anno</i>) and Pearl Games manager Sébastien Dujardin. Here's a game description from the publisher:</p>
<blockquote><p><i>Troyes</i> is a strategy game in which players represent a rich family from the Champagne region, using their inﬂuence to recruit and supervise individuals in three prominent domains: military, religious, and civil. Each domain is represented by its own color (utilized on the cards) and offers its own beneﬁts.</p>
<p>The inhabitants of the city provide a work force, created by rolling 18 dice at the beginning of the round. Next, the players will meld sets of 1 to 3 dice of the same color in order to execute an action; the nine activities of the city include such things as building the cathedral, grappling with an unfortunate event, or even recruiting new residents in order to be able to roll more dice next round. The dice used by a player are free if they are his own citizens, but each player also has the opportunity to open his purse to recruit his enemies’ citizens. Players can use their inﬂuence to change the result of the dice, giving them a degree of control rarely seen in a dice game!</p>

In order to gain still greater fame, he will also try to divine the other players’ agendas. The player who has garnered the most fame, as a result of his every action, will win the game. To ensure plenty of replay value, there are 27 Activity cards available, but only nine of them are used each game.</p>

Build Your Fame One Die at a Time

<p>Just to let everyone know, because of this column I got another writing assignment! It's again a volunteer assignment, but it's good practice. I'll be writing post-game comments for <a href="http://www.lakersnation.com/" rel="nofollow">Lakers Nation</a>, a Los Angeles Lakers fan site. Thanks, Boardgame News! I'll still be here, of course, as the two subjects don't intermix in the least:)</p>
<p>Today I want to talk about "gateway games" and how to choose them. Gateway games are those you want to play with people who don't normally play games or with people who may be interested in games that are more complex than what they are used to but don't know where to start. I looked at the gateway game lists on BoardGameGeek, and I was pretty disappointed with them as a whole. <i>Power Grid</i> as a gateway game? Ouch! So at the end of the article is a link to my Ms. Meeples' list on BGG.</p>
<p>I recently got into a discussion (not on BGG) over the game <i>Citadels</i>, with someone saying it's a great gateway game and me saying it's a terrible gateway game. He said that everyone who played the game with him really enjoyed it. This leads into rule number one in choosing a game for non-gamers: Be sure that YOU like the game. I once asked a friend to teach some other friends the game <i>Dominion</i>. He said, "I don't like the game Dominion, but I'll teach it to them." He did, and naturally they didn't like it either. Now maybe they wouldn't have liked it anyway, but you need to enjoy the game you are teaching. Your enthusiasm will show through, and you'll be able to minimize its downsides and emphasize the fun parts.</p>
<p>Rule number two is to decide what the point is of teaching the game. Are you looking for a way to simply pass the time until some event starts? Do you have people who want to learn more about the hobby and have gathered to be taught a game? Is it after your family Thanksgiving meal (with wine, of course) and everyone is kind of mellow?  As you can probably tell, each of these situations will call for a different kind of game. You don't really want to teach <i>Dominion</i> to the last group, for instance, as it takes too much concentration.  A game of <i>Choice</i> would probably go great with the people who just want to pass the time.</p>
<p>Rule number three is to match the complexity of the game to the interest level of the people playing it. The people who have come to your house to play a game are going to be more willing to sit through a 15-minute teaching session than people who work with you and just want to spend an hour playing a game while waiting for a plane or a meeting or whatever.</p>
<p>Rule number four is to determine how much "Take that!" you want in the game.  If you're teaching friends who love that kind of action and can take it good naturedly, then <i>Citadels</i> would probably work well. On the other hand, I would specifically not recommend the game for gaming with your boss.</p>
<p>That's really it. Everything else is fairly obvious.</p>
